Can a windscreen chip actually be repaired, or does it need replacing?

Most small chips can be repaired — and repairing early is almost always the better outcome. Repair injects a clear resin into the damage under vacuum and pressure, then cures it hard with UV light. It restores most of the strength and clarity, stops the damage spreading, and keeps your original factory-sealed glass in place. That last point matters: keeping the original bond avoids any disruption to seals, sensors and the windscreen’s structural role.

As a rough rule of thumb used across the trade, a chip is usually repairable if it is roughly smaller than a £2 coin, cracks are shorter than around 15 cm (about the length of a bank card and a bit), the damage is not directly in the driver’s line of sight, and it hasn’t reached the very edge of the glass. Damage at the edge tends to spread because that’s where stress concentrates, and damage straight ahead of the driver can leave slight optical distortion even after a good repair — which is why line-of-sight chips often point towards replacement instead.
